It’s nearly here! My new book Cree. The official book launch is at Waterstones Durham, 6–7pm on Friday 5th October with further events at Waterstones London (TCR) on Monday 1st 6pm and at Lakes International Comic Art Festival (Kendal) 10am till 5pm on Saturday 13th October in the Page 45 room in the clocktower.
Commissioned by New Writing North and Durham Book Festival, this is the first time this organisation has commissioned graphic work, so it’s a real honour and it’s a beautiful book – colourful, an exercise in asymmetry, a special fold out centre and it’s based on real life stories of Stanley, County Durham. Cree is the result of a two year project with research and development, public participation, events and finally this full colour comic book.
The drawing below is one I made when I visited the Just For Women Centre in Stanley, County Durham, where women meet to support one another and make things for their collective shop. The project began at Durham Book Festival in October 2017 with zine making in a day at the Empty Shop TESST space then continued with a lovely chat between me and Mary Talbot and many lovely chats with the women who care for one another and make amazing stuff for the Just For Women shop on Stanley Front Street. The finished book is published by Mayfly Press, New Writing North’s own imprint, retailing at £12.99. It will be available first at OK Comics in Leeds, Page 45 in Nottingham (from the 6th October) and then at the usual bookshops online and in real life. We are working on pre-orders so I’ll let you know about that through social media when I have details. You’ll also be able to buy a signed and doodled copy directly from me through my online shop.
